National Weather Service issues severe thunderstorm warning for Rankin County
The National Weather Service in Jackson issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 2:55 p.m. CDT Thursday for central Rankin County in central Mississippi, officials said. The warning was in effect until 3:30 p.m. CDT after a storm that the agency reported was located over Brandon and moving east at 20 mph.
The bulletin said radar indicated wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to 0.75 inches in diameter. Officials warned of possible damage to roofs, siding and trees and advised that the storm would be near Jackson and Brandon around 3:00 p.m. CDT.
The National Weather Service said people in the warned area should move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building for protection. The agency routinely issues such warnings when radar or observations indicate a storm poses a threat to life and property.
This is a developing situation. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
