Starkville police say man dies of self-inflicted gunshot at Chandler Park apartments

STARKVILLE, Mississippi — The Starkville Police Department said a man died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound late Monday night at Chandler Park apartments, 309 Reed Road.

In a news release posted July 28, the department said officers were dispatched at approximately 10:28 p.m. July 27 by Oktibbeha County E911 to Surhaver Avenue after a report of an individual banging on a residence door. The man left the area before officers arrived, the release said.

Officers stayed in the area and about 11:09 p.m. observed the vehicle enter Chandler Park apartments and attempted to make contact with the driver, the department said. The individual exited the vehicle and fled on foot into the complex, and officers observed him display a firearm while continuing to evade them.

At about 11:15 p.m., an officer near the scene heard a single gunshot, took cover behind a car and then recognized the individual had sustained an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the release said. Emergency medical services were dispatched and a pistol was located next to the man.

The department said an autopsy has been requested and that, based on its investigation and available evidence, no officers discharged their firearms. The release said police will make videos, radio traffic and other information gathered that night available for review, and that representatives from local media have already reviewed the video evidence.

The Starkville Police Department extended condolences to the man’s family. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
