Vicksburg Police Department is investigating an incident that began about 10:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, after an attempted traffic stop near Clay and Monroe streets, the department said.
An officer attempted to stop a vehicle for driving without its lights on when the driver refused to stop, VPD said. While traveling on Monroe Street the driver exited the vehicle while it was still moving and fled on foot. The unoccupied vehicle continued moving and struck a parked car.
The officer pursued the person on foot but returned to his patrol vehicle to retrieve a flashlight after approaching a dark area, VPD said. While retrieving the flashlight the officer heard a gunshot, took cover and awaited additional officers. VPD said preliminary information indicates the shot was not fired at the officer.
Responding officers established a perimeter and searched the surrounding area but were unable to locate the individual, the department said. The officer sustained a wrist injury during the foot pursuit, was treated at Merit Health River Region and released to return to duty. The incident remains under investigation.
