Strong thunderstorm moves through northeastern Rankin County

A weather bulletin posted on Facebook at 6:06 p.m. CDT Monday said a strong thunderstorm was impacting northeastern Rankin County, Mississippi, and moving southeast at about 15 mph.

The bulletin said radar indicated wind gusts up to 40 mph. It warned that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects, and it listed a maximum hail size of 0.00 inch.

The post said the storm would be near Jackson and Brandon around 6:10 p.m. CDT and near Pelahatchie around 6:15 p.m. CDT. It advised people outdoors to consider seeking shelter inside a building.

Rankin County includes the city of Brandon and is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Strong thunderstorms in central Mississippi can produce sudden gusts that damage trees and property and may lead to localized power outages, which is why officials typically urge residents to move indoors and secure loose items.
