Police step up speed enforcement in school zones during drop-off, pick-up

A local police department said recently it has received reports of drivers exceeding speed limits in school zones during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times and will increase enforcement in those areas this week.

The department said officers are already working traffic in school zones and will focus on speed enforcement during the times when children arrive and leave campus. The agency posted the notice on its Facebook page, urging motorists to obey posted limits and watch for officers and pedestrians in the roadways.

School zones typically have reduced speed limits during arrival and dismissal periods to protect students and pedestrians. Speeding in those areas increases the risk of crashes and injuries because children can be unpredictable near streets and crosswalks, officials say. Increased enforcement aims to deter risky driving and improve safety for families and staff.

Motorists are advised to slow down, remain alert and follow directions from officers directing traffic. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
