Hattiesburg officers welcome students as school zones become active

Hattiesburg Police officers started their morning at schools across the city, welcoming students back with cheers and encouragement, the Hattiesburg Police Department said in a Facebook post.

The department said the return of students means school zones are active again and urged drivers to slow down, put away distractions and stay alert for children walking or biking to school. The post also reminded motorists to stop for school buses when required and to follow the directions of crossing guards.

The Hattiesburg Police Department is the municipal law enforcement agency for Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Police often take a visible role at the start of the school year to promote traffic safety and to reassure students and parents as children resume in-person classes.

The reminders come as communities nationwide emphasize steps to reduce traffic injuries near schools, including obeying posted speed limits and yielding to pedestrians. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
