Starkville police arrest two in Maxwell Street shooting

Starkville police said Wednesday they arrested two people in connection with a shooting that took place April 25 on Maxwell Street near Lummus Drive.

The Starkville Police Department said in an April 26 news release posted to its Facebook page that Juantel Hughes, 19, and Jordyn Barrett, 21, both of Starkville, were charged with attempted murder. Both are being held at the Oktibbeha County Jail, the department said.

The release said Hughes and Barrett have earlier arrests in the area from September 2025 that are unrelated to this incident. In a separate note, the department said it made 26 arrests during a short time frame that were unrelated to the Maxwell Street shooting.

The department thanked the Mississippi State University Police Department and the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office for assistance. The release said the investigation remains active and more arrests are expected. Starkville is home to Mississippi State University; police activity on and near campus can carry heightened public interest. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
