School zones in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, will be active next week as students return to classrooms, the Hattiesburg Police Department said in a Facebook post.
The department said recent years have seen serious accidents involving students in and around school zones, and it urged drivers to slow down and stay alert to help keep students safe.
Police advised motorists to put away distractions and remain attentive for students, crossing guards and school buses during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal. The speed limit in an active school zone is 15 mph, the department said, and drivers should allow a few extra minutes for travel to avoid rushing.
