National Weather Service issues slight risk for severe storms in Mississippi

The National Weather Service said it has issued a slight risk for severe storms across parts of Mississippi this afternoon into tonight, June 1, 2026. The agency warned the state could see severe storms, damaging winds and hail up to quarter-size.

The National Weather Service is the federal agency responsible for weather forecasts, watches and warnings. Its outlooks use categorical risk levels to indicate the potential for organized severe weather and to help officials and the public prepare.

Even a “slight” risk can produce storms that endanger people and property. Damaging winds and sizable hail can down trees and power lines, damage vehicles and roofs, and disrupt travel and outdoor events. Residents should monitor local forecasts, heed any warnings, and be prepared to move to safe shelter if conditions deteriorate.

Local meteorologists and emergency management officials will have the most up-to-date information for specific communities. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
