NWS upgrades parts of Mississippi to slight severe storm risk

The National Weather Service on Wednesday upgraded portions of central, northern and eastern Mississippi to a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe storms, effective mainly from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the agency said.

The primary threats in the upgraded area include damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and isolated severe thunderstorms, the NWS said. Local areas within the outlook should monitor conditions closely through the evening hours.

The NWS advised residents to take a few minutes now to prepare: have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, know where you will go if a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued, secure loose outdoor items and use extra caution if traveling during storms.

Slight Risk is one level in the NWS convective outlook framework used to indicate the potential for scattered severe storms. The upgrade signals an increased chance of storms capable of producing strong winds and localized severe impacts.

Residents should continue to follow the NWS and local meteorologists for the latest watches and warnings. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
