Hurricane season begins; MEMA urges residents to prepare

Hurricane season begins June 1 and Mississippi Emergency Management Agency officials are urging residents to take preparedness steps now, before a storm moves into the Gulf. Small actions taken early — from assembling an emergency kit to knowing evacuation zones and staying informed — can reduce risk if a storm approaches, MEMA said.

In a message this week, MEMA Executive Director Stephen McCraney encouraged families to review plans, gather supplies and download the agency’s mobile app for alerts and guidance. The agency directs people to MSEMA.org for preparedness tips and resources.

Hurricane season runs June 1-Nov. 30 and routinely brings hazards such as high winds, heavy rain, storm surge and inland flooding. Officials say understanding local evacuation routes, securing property and having a communication plan can help households weather storms and speed recovery.

The reminder comes as state emergency managers emphasize readiness across coastal and inland communities that can be affected by tropical systems. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
