Mississippi counties report storm, flood damage

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said counties have reported road, infrastructure and property damage after severe storms and major flooding statewide.

The agency, in a Facebook post, listed assessments from multiple counties including Covington, Harrison, Stone, Jackson, Hancock and Pearl River.

In Covington County, preliminary assessments indicate approximately 10 road and infrastructure damage sites and about 10 structures with minor impacts, and one church reported water intrusion, the agency said. In Harrison County, one of the 10 wastewater treatment facilities operated by the Harrison County Utility Authority sustained significant flood damage.

Stone County officials are keeping a shelter open at Stone County Middle School, the update said. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) closed Highway 57 at Vestry in Jackson County because of flooding. The American Red Cross is supporting the shelter there, roads along the Pascagoula River west of Highway 613 were beginning to flood, and the road department continued to replenish sandbags as needed.

Hancock County confirmed two EF-1 tornadoes occurred last night, the post said. Pearl River County identified 22 affected residences, one business with minor damage, six public roads and one publicly owned building reporting impacts. County officials are monitoring waterways, road conditions and flood impacts.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
