Officials report injuries, widespread damage after Mississippi storm
Local officials said in a Facebook post that a storm that struck Mississippi last night left 17 people injured and caused significant property damage across multiple counties.
In Lamar County, the post said 275 homes and 50 apartment units were damaged or rendered inaccessible and about 30 roads were closed by debris. The county shelter and safe room are open and American Red Cross support is available, the post said.
More than 200 homes were reported damaged in Lincoln County, and volunteers known as the Cajun Navy are deploying a 50-person shelter pod, a 30-kilowatt generator and 10 pallets of supplies, the post said. In Lawrence County, officials reported 12 homes damaged and multiple roads closed by downed trees and power lines.
The post described the numbers as preliminary and said the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is supporting damage and operations assessments. Road-clearing teams are being deployed and the state is moving additional resources as requested by local emergency managers. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
