Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said Tuesday it is closely monitoring Tropical Depression Two, which it expects to become a tropical storm later today and to impact Mississippi in the coming days.
The agency posted on its Facebook page that areas of flash flooding are possible through Friday along the Gulf Coast and in southern Mississippi and encouraged citizens to monitor the progress of the storm system.
MEMA is the state agency responsible for coordinating disaster response and preparedness. It works with local officials, the National Weather Service and federal partners to track severe weather, issue advisories and support communities before, during and after storms.
Emergency managers say tropical depressions that strengthen into tropical storms can produce heavy rainfall and rapid runoff, increasing the risk of flash flooding and hazardous conditions. Residents along the coast and in low-lying areas should monitor forecasts and heed guidance from local officials.
