MEMA reports death, assists response to flash flooding in Forrest, Lamar counties
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said in a Facebook post that Forrest County reported one death after flash flooding affected parts of Forrest and Lamar counties.
MEMA said it is in contact with local emergency managers and is assisting in the response. An area coordinator has been deployed and additional resources will be sent as requested, the agency said.
Officials urged residents to avoid flooded roadways. “If you encounter a flooded area, please do not try to drive or walk through it. For your safety, please turn around,” the agency said. Flash flooding can rise rapidly and create strong currents that sweep away vehicles and people, making avoidance a primary safety measure.
Forrest and Lamar counties are in southern Mississippi. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency coordinates state support during disasters and works with local officials to allocate personnel and equipment. Details remain limited; we will provide more information as it becomes available.
