Rankin County warns residents of increased flooding risk from Gulf tropical system

Rankin County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to remain weather aware after posting a weather alert on its Facebook page saying confidence has increased in a forecasted tropical system in the western Gulf that is expected to affect the area through the remainder of the week.

The sheriff’s office said prolonged rainfall from the system is expected to increase the chances for localized flooding. The office, which provides law enforcement and emergency coordination for Rankin County, made the post to inform residents and encourage preparedness.

Tropical systems can bring heavy, sustained rain that overwhelms drainage systems and leads to flash and localized flooding. Residents in Mississippi and other Gulf Coast states often face risks to travel, property and low-lying areas when storms produce prolonged rainfall.

Officials typically advise monitoring updates from local authorities and the National Weather Service, avoiding driving through flooded roadways and preparing for possible localized flooding. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
