MEMA warns Mississippi of flooding from Potential Tropical Cyclone One
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency officials said they are monitoring and preparing for Potential Tropical Cyclone One, which is forecast to bring heavy rainfall to Mississippi beginning late Wednesday, June 17, 2026, and into Thursday, June 18, 2026.
MEMA said widespread flooding is likely, with roads potentially closed or washed out and structures at risk of flooding. The agency said Mississippi could also see damaging wind gusts and brief, weak tornadoes.
The agency said it is filling requests for sandbags from multiple counties and urged residents to stay weather aware, know where to go if they need to evacuate from rising water, identify alternate routes in case roads flood and heed the admonition: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” The information was posted on MEMA’s official Facebook page.
MEMA coordinates disaster response and preparedness in the state. The designation “Potential Tropical Cyclone” is used by the National Hurricane Center to allow issuance of watches and warnings for systems expected to affect land even before they become a tropical cyclone.
Officials said they will continue to monitor conditions and update the public. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
