NWS Jackson warns of flash flooding in central, southern Mississippi

The U.S. National Weather Service office in Jackson, Mississippi, said on its Facebook page that flash flooding is expected in parts of Mississippi today, especially in central and southern areas, and urged residents to stay alert and use extra caution while traveling.

The National Weather Service, a federal agency within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, issues forecasts and warnings for hazardous weather across the nation and coordinates with state and local emergency managers to protect life and property.

The Facebook post repeated the agency’s safety slogan, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown,” and noted, “It only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep away a vehicle.” The office emphasized that motorists should not drive through flooded roadways.

The warning underscores the potential for travel disruptions and hazardous conditions on local roads. Motorists and residents in affected areas should monitor forecasts, avoid unnecessary travel when flooding is possible, and follow guidance from local emergency officials.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
