Hattiesburg police investigate overnight Hardy Street shooting
Hattiesburg police are investigating an overnight shooting after officers responded to reports of shots fired at 9:56 p.m. Tuesday in the 4400 block of Hardy Street, the department said.
Officers who arrived at the scene located evidence confirming a shooting had occurred. Shortly after, a person arrived at a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, the Hattiesburg Police Department said in a Facebook post.
Investigators spoke with an individual at the scene who said he fired the shots after being assaulted during an altercation. That person remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, the department said. Based on evidence gathered so far, detectives determined the person who fired the weapon was acting in self-defense. No charges have been filed at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Hattiesburg is a city in southern Mississippi. Police investigations of shootings typically include interviews, evidence collection and review of any available video or witness accounts as detectives determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
