Lowndes County law enforcement is urging residents to take steps to keep students safe as the new school year begins, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office said. Sheriff Eddie Hawkins asked parents, students and drivers to be vigilant around school zones and bus routes.
The sheriff’s office advised drivers to slow down in school zones, obey posted speed limits, stop for school buses when their stop arms are extended and avoid distractions such as cell phones. The office also urged motorists to watch carefully for children walking or riding bicycles and to allow extra time so they are not rushed.
Parents were asked to remind children to stay aware of their surroundings, follow school safety rules and report anything that seems out of the ordinary to a trusted adult, teacher or School Resource Officer. Sheriff Hawkins said deputies and School Resource Officers will be out in force during the first weeks of school to help with traffic, monitor campuses and support student safety.
