Hathorn Road reopens after flooding; Oxford streets briefly impassable
Hathorn Road near the Suites in Oxford, Mississippi, has reopened after a brief closure for flooding, the Oxford Police Department said late Wednesday. The department posted updates on its Facebook page indicating that other affected streets were cleared earlier.
At 9:07 p.m., the department said South 18th Street, South 16th Street and South 9th Street near Tyler were passable, and at 9:10 p.m. it posted that Hathorn Road had been reopened. The earlier alert warned motorists that Hathorn Road was impassable due to flooding and asked drivers to avoid the area.
The Oxford Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency for Oxford, a city that is home to the University of Mississippi. Road closures in the city can disrupt commuter and campus traffic and require coordination among police, public works and emergency responders to ensure public safety.
Emergency officials generally advise motorists to avoid driving through flooded roadways because water depth and road damage can be hard to see. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
