Scammers impersonate Alcorn County sheriff’s deputies in phone calls
Several residents received phone calls from a person claiming to be an officer with the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office who said the recipient had a warrant and must pay or face arrest, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.
The office said the calls are a scam and warned that the caller may make the phone number appear to be the sheriff’s office number or use the name of an actual deputy. The sheriff’s office said no one from the agency will ever call and attempt to collect money.
County sheriff’s offices are the primary law enforcement agencies in their jurisdictions and handle arrests, warrants and investigations. Impersonation scams that use caller ID spoofing and false threats of arrest are a common tactic used to intimidate people into sending money or providing personal information.
Officials advise residents to hang up immediately if they receive a similar call, not to provide personal or financial information and to contact the sheriff’s office using its official number to verify any claim. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
