William Carey defeated Thomas University 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Danny Owens Field in Hattiesburg, with Fernando Pirry scoring the match’s lone goal in the second half.
The Crusaders controlled the opening half and outshot the Night Hawks 15-1. Thomas’ goalkeeper made four saves to keep the match scoreless at halftime.
Carey continued applying pressure after halftime and broke through in the 54th minute. Luka Brandic sent a ball into the box, and Pirry directed a low header into the net.
The Crusaders continued to seek an insurance goal, while their defense limited Thomas to two shots on target. Pablo Diez made the saves needed to preserve the shutout.
William Carey will travel to Mobile, Alabama, to face the University of Mobile on Thursday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
