Mississippi State opens Canadian Collegiate Invitational in second place

Mississippi State finished Sunday’s opening round of the Canadian Collegiate Invitational in second place at 282, two strokes under par, in Foot’s Bay, Ontario. New Mexico led the 13-team field at 276, or 8 under par, while Notre Dame was third at 284.

The Bulldogs were one of three teams to shoot par or better and recorded 18 birdies during the round.

Sophomore Bryson Hughes led Mississippi State individually, tying for second in the 73-player field with a career-best 3-under 68. It was his second round of 68 this season, and his seven birdies led the field. Hughes also tied for second in par-4 scoring at 3 under.

Arth Sinha was tied for eighth after shooting 1-under 70 with five birdies. Finn Burkholder shot an even-par 71 in his Mississippi State debut and was tied for 13th.

Gavin Isbell shot 73, or 2 over par, to tie for 25th, while Yago Horno shot 76 to tie for 48th. Ben Kelling finished with an 84 and was 72nd.

The tournament was scheduled to continue with its second round after Mississippi State’s opening-day performance.
