Jackson State men finish second at Warhawk Invitational; Achau wins 5K

Jackson State’s men’s cross country team finished second with 58 points at Friday’s Warhawk Invitational, hosted by ULM at the Sterlington Sports Complex. The Tigers placed four runners in the individual top 10.

Freshman Ryan Achau won the men’s 5K in 14:59.41, earning his second consecutive individual victory in as many meets. Achau was named the SWAC Men’s Newcomer of the Week after winning the MC Opener earlier this month.

Sophomore Duncan Koima finished fourth in 15:40.78. Godfrey Kimutai placed inside the top 10 in 16:02.30, followed by Collins Kibet in 16:06.83. Derrick Eskridge and Levy Russell III completed Jackson State’s scoring five, finishing 41st and 42nd in 20:06.58 and 20:09.49, respectively.

The Jackson State women finished fourth with 82 points and placed two runners in the individual top 10. Lorine Jelagat led the Tigers by finishing seventh in 19:59.85, while freshman Sya Bolden was ninth in 20:15.65.

Jackson State’s other scoring runners were Joan Koech, 21st in 21:30.57; Karina Griffin, 23rd in 21:32.73; Kimani Tindal, 27th in 23:46.29; and Kaylin Jackson, 29th in 24:24.08.

The Tigers return to competition Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Nicholls XC Invitational in Thibodaux. The men’s four-mile race is scheduled for 8 a.m. CT, followed by the women’s 5K at 8:30 a.m.
