Jackson State volleyball lost in straight sets to Lamar and Southern Miss on Saturday at the Southern Miss Wellness Center in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, moving to 4-6 on the season.
The Tigers opened against Lamar, falling 25-15, 25-23 and 25-21. Shelby Zanders and Hope Briggs each recorded eight kills. Zanders hit .412 on 17 attempts, added two blocks and finished with 9.5 points, while Briggs hit .278 and contributed five digs and two block assists.
Naija Gadis and Kayla Troutman each had 10 assists, with Gadis adding 12 digs. Giannelle Asomani recorded eight digs, four assists and Jackson State’s lone service ace in the match.
Jackson State built a 19-12 lead in the second set before Lamar rallied for a 25-23 win. The Tigers also took a 20-17 advantage in the third set, but Lamar closed with an 8-1 run.
Against Southern Miss, Jackson State fell 25-23, 25-19 and 25-20. The Tigers recorded 11 total blocks, including six in the third set. Zanders led the team with six kills while hitting .313, and Sophia McKenzie added five kills. Jayla David and Parker Featherstone each had four kills.
Featherstone led Jackson State with 12 digs against Southern Miss. Asomani added eight digs and five assists, while Gadis finished with nine assists and six digs. Across the two matches, Jackson State recorded 54 kills, 94 digs and 17 total blocks.
Jackson State will next compete in the Ragin’ Cajun Classic in Lafayette, Louisiana. The Tigers are scheduled to play UT Arlington at 11 a.m. and Mississippi State at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
