Southern Miss volleyball sweeps two matches, improves to 8-1

Southern Miss completed a perfect weekend at the Southern Miss Invitational with 3-0 victories over Southern and Jackson State at the Wellness Center in Hattiesburg, improving to 8-1. The start is the program’s best since it opened the 2015 season 9-0.

The Golden Eagles opened with a 25-23, 25-23, 25-16 victory over Southern. Southern Miss overcame a 23-20 deficit in the first set with five consecutive points, then closed the second set on a 7-0 run after trailing 23-18. Elly Stewart had eight kills, Sadie McAda had seven and Allie Hazelwood recorded 31 assists.

Tarah Yunes made her first appearance of the season in the match and recorded two kills, including the kill that completed the sweep.

Southern Miss then defeated Jackson State 25-23, 25-19, 25-20. McAda recorded seven kills in the second set as the Golden Eagles hit .441 as a team, and she added five kills in the third to finish with 14 kills. She also had 13 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.

Diana Wells contributed nine kills, Emily Davis had eight and Stewart finished with six in the Jackson State match. Hazelwood had 34 assists and a kill, while Maggie Sewell recorded four kills in her first action of the season.

Across the two matches, Southern Miss totaled 84 kills, 74 assists and 16 aces, earning its fifth and sixth consecutive victories.

Southern Miss will next travel to Memphis, Tennessee, for Rumble at the Roane. The Golden Eagles are scheduled to face Memphis on Sept. 17 and Little Rock on Sept. 18.
