National Weather Service warns of flash flood threat across Mississippi

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood risk for Tuesday, May 26, 2026, across large portions of Mississippi, saying some areas could receive 2 to 3 inches of rain in less than three hours.

The agency said the heavy, rapid rainfall may cause flash flooding, flood-swept roads and closures, and could threaten some structures with inundation. Minor river flooding is also expected in parts of the state.

Flash floods develop quickly and can pose immediate danger to people and property, particularly on roadways and in low-lying areas. The Weather Service urged residents to stay weather aware, identify safe locations and alternate routes in case of flooded roads, and follow the “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” guidance to avoid driving through standing water.

The National Weather Service operates a network of forecast offices that issue watches, warnings and flood statements to help communities prepare for hazardous conditions. Heavy rain and fast runoff can overwhelm drainage systems and create hazardous travel conditions across both urban and rural areas.

Officials encourage Mississippians to monitor local forecasts and emergency alerts for updates. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
