MEMA director warns of flash flood risk this weekend

Stephen “Mac” McCraney, executive director of the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, posted an update on Facebook warning of a risk for flash flooding this weekend.

MEMA is the state agency responsible for coordinating disaster preparedness, response and recovery. Its leaders provide guidance to local officials and residents when severe weather threatens populated areas.

Flash floods can develop rapidly during heavy rainfall and pose life‑threatening hazards, including swift currents and flooded roadways. Emergency management agencies typically urge residents to monitor local forecasts and alerts, avoid driving through standing or moving water and follow instructions from local officials.

McCraney’s post underscores the importance of preparedness ahead of the weekend weather threat. Residents in areas prone to flooding should review safety plans and be ready to move to higher ground if conditions deteriorate. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
