Mississippi reports 26 injured after tornadoes
JACKSON — Gov. Tate Reeves said 26 people were injured after tornadoes moved through Mississippi, with 22 injuries reported in Lincoln County, three in Lamar County and one in Franklin County.
Reeves said the Mississippi State Department of Health is expected to meet with hospitals to assess the status of those injured. Power outages statewide have dropped to about 1,460 from a peak of about 20,100, and utility crews continue working to restore service, Reeves said.
In Lincoln County, eight roads remain impassable because of debris and damage assessments are expected to take place with support from Hinds, Covington, Jones and Forrest counties and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, Reeves said. The American Red Cross shelter in Brookhaven had no occupants overnight, he said.
Two distribution points remain open at the Bogue Chitto and East Lincoln fire departments, and feeding operations continue at those sites, at Auburn Road near Calvary Road and at Bogue Chitto Baptist Church. Samaritan’s Purse opened a volunteer intake site at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with orientations at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. daily as needed, and a donation intake center is at the Lincoln County School District building at 702 Saints Trail NW in Brookhaven. Reeves said assessments in Lamar and Franklin counties are complete, roadways in Franklin County are passable and the county emergency operations center has returned to normal operations. He thanked volunteers, first responders, utility crews and emergency managers assisting with recovery.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
