MEMA reports damage after Mississippi storms, flooding
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said damage assessments continue after severe storms and major flooding across the state. As of now, MEMA reported homes destroyed: seven; major damage: 35; minor damage: 55; and affected: 54.
MEMA said businesses reported major damage to three properties and minor damage to seven. Farms reported major damage to one property. Public roads were listed as destroyed at four locations, major damage at six locations and minor damage at 40 locations. Bridges reported major damage at two locations and minor damage at one, and public buildings had minor damage at three locations. Three EPAs are reporting damage.
Two rivers were in moderate flood stage, the Leaf River near McClain and the Pascagoula River at Graham Ferry, MEMA said. Eleven rivers were in minor flood stage, including the Big Black River near Bentonia; Biloxi River near Lyman; Chickasawhay River at Enterprise and at Leakesville; Pascagoula River at Merrill; and the Pearl River at Jackson, near Pearl River and near Philadelphia, at Rockport, as well as Tallahala Creek at Laurel and Tuscolameta Creek at Walnut Grove.
MEMA urged residents who have storm or flood damage to file an insurance claim, take photos of the damage and report damage to their county and to MEMA using the agency’s citizen self-reporting tool. MEMA said the self-report tool is not a 9-1-1 service and is not an application for financial assistance; call 9-1-1 for life-threatening emergencies. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
