MEMA responds to severe storms after seven tornadoes strike Mississippi

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is continuing response and recovery operations after severe weather swept the state on May 6 and 7, 2026, the agency said.

The National Weather Service confirmed that seven tornadoes touched down on May 6, with the strongest being two EF3 tornadoes that struck Franklin and Lamar counties, the agency reported. MEMA posted details and directed residents to its website for damage assessments and recovery information.

MEMA coordinates disaster response for the state, working with local officials and federal partners to assess damage, support search and rescue efforts and help restore essential services. The agency said it is focused on damage assessments and recovery efforts, and it has posted resources and guidance on its website.

EF3 tornadoes are classified on the Enhanced Fujita scale as capable of severe damage, and such storms can produce downed trees and power lines, damaged structures and interruptions to transportation and utilities. Residents in affected areas are advised to follow local emergency instructions and check MEMA’s site for updates.
