NWS confirms seven tornadoes hit Mississippi; two EF3s strike Franklin, Lamar counties
The National Weather Service confirmed that seven tornadoes touched down in Mississippi on May 6, including two that were rated EF3 and struck Franklin and Lamar counties, the agency said.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said about 5,360 customers remained without power statewide, down from a peak of about 20,100 outages recorded after the storms.
MEMA said the following counties have submitted preliminary damage reports: Forrest County, two homes; Franklin County, one injury and damage assessments ongoing; Lamar County, four injuries, 46 homes and eight businesses; Lawrence County, damage assessments ongoing; Lincoln County, 12 injuries and damage assessments ongoing; Marion County, three homes; and Wilkinson County, five homes. MEMA said the numbers are preliminary and may change as assessments continue.
Shelters remain open for residents displaced by the storms at Lamar County Safe Room, 99 Central Industrial Row, Purvis; and Lincoln County Safe Room, 1154 Belt Line Drive, Brookhaven. MEMA and local partners also set up donation centers at Bogue Chitto Fire Department, 351 Bogue Chitto Road SE, Bogue Chitto, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and East Lincoln Fire Department, 3347 East Lincoln Road SE, Brookhaven, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
MEMA said it continues to coordinate response and recovery with local, state and volunteer partners and has delivered tarps to Lawrence, Lamar and Lincoln counties. The state will continue to deliver resources as requested by local emergency managers. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
