MEMA warns of enhanced severe weather risk across central Mississippi
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency warned Tuesday that parts of the state face an elevated risk for severe storms this week, saying north Mississippi is under a slight risk overnight May 5 and central Mississippi faces an enhanced risk from the afternoon of May 6 through early May 7.
MEMA, the state agency responsible for emergency preparedness and response, posted the alert on its Facebook page and urged residents to continue following their local meteorologist for the latest forecast in their area.
National and state weather services use risk categories such as “slight” and “enhanced” to indicate the probability and potential severity of storms. Severe thunderstorms can produce damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes, and forecasters typically advise preparedness when risk levels rise.
Officials recommend that residents review emergency plans, secure loose outdoor items and ensure they have a reliable way to receive warnings, such as a weather radio or a mobile alert app. People in affected areas should monitor local forecasts and be ready to take shelter if warnings are issued.
We will provide more information as it becomes available.
