Mississippi emergency agency warns of enhanced severe weather risk

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe storms has shifted a little further south and will affect parts of the state from Wednesday afternoon (May 6, 2026) into early Thursday morning (May 7, 2026).

The agency said the threat could include tornadoes, with strong tornadoes possible; damaging winds up to 70 mph; hail up to golf-ball size; and flash flooding. The advisory was posted on MEMA’s Facebook page.

MEMA is the state agency that coordinates disaster preparedness, response and recovery in Mississippi. An Enhanced Risk at this level denotes a heightened potential for organized severe storms that can produce damaging impacts to property and hazards to life and travel, officials said.

The agency urged residents to stay weather-aware throughout the day, have multiple ways to receive warnings, know their safe place and follow the guidance to “turn around, don’t drown” when encountering flooded roads. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
