Auditor White issues statement after Anne McGrew sentenced in welfare misspending case

JACKSON, Miss. — State Auditor Shad White issued a statement after Anne McGrew was sentenced in a welfare misspending case, saying the sentencing marks the first prison term in a scheme his office uncovered more than six years ago.

“The first person was sentenced to prison today in the welfare fraud scheme that my office uncovered over six years ago. My understanding from prosecutors is that the court will be sentencing the other six people who pleaded guilty soon,” White said.

The Mississippi State Auditor’s Office audits public spending and investigates allegations of misuse of taxpayer funds. White’s office opened the probe that led to charges in what he called “the largest public fraud scheme in state history,” a designation that underscores the scale and public interest in the case.

The sentencing is significant because it represents a step toward accountability for alleged misuse of public assistance dollars and may lead to additional court actions as co-defendants are scheduled for sentencing, White said. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
