Residents affected by Tropical Storm Arthur (DR-4930) should follow several steps when applying for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a Facebook post said.
The post advised applicants to read any FEMA letters carefully because denials may be appealable and an appeal could change the outcome. It said filing an insurance claim will not affect FEMA benefits and urged applicants to contact their insurance companies to report damage.
Applicants should answer calls from FEMA, the post said, because representatives may call from unfamiliar area codes and could need additional information. It also recommended gathering documents in advance to speed the application process.
The post cautioned that reporting damage through Crisis Track does not constitute a FEMA application. Individuals must still complete a FEMA application to be considered for federal disaster assistance.
