Mississippi declares state of emergency as Tropical Storm Arthur brings flooding

Mississippi declared a state of emergency after Tropical Storm Arthur brought continuous heavy rainfall, strong winds and widespread flooding, state officials said in a Facebook post.

Officials said additional heavy rainfall is forecast for areas already affected. The post said the storms have damaged homes, businesses and public property and threatened the safety of residents.

At least 10 counties have been impacted, officials said, with damage impairing roadways, energy infrastructure and important natural resources. The declaration covers areas affected or potentially affected by the storms and will allow state officials to mobilize assets and better support response efforts in impacted counties, the post said. It will remain in effect until the threat to public safety ceases to exist.

The Facebook post urged residents to take precautions, saying, “Please continue to stay weather aware and safe, Mississippi!” Tropical storms can cause rapid flooding, power outages and hazardous travel; residents should follow local guidance and monitor forecasts. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
