Vicksburg police investigate shooting on Locust Street

VICKSBURG, Mississippi — The Vicksburg Police Department is investigating a shooting that wounded a 19-year-old just before noon on Saturday, July 4, in the 900 block of Locust Street, the department said.

Officers responded to 915 Locust Street, where they located 19-year-old Jayden Elmore with a gunshot wound to the back, the department said. Elmore told officers he was standing on the front porch when he saw an unidentified Black male wearing a ski mask across the street, and that the individual fired multiple shots in his direction before fleeing.

Investigators recovered seven spent shell casings at the scene, the department said. Elmore was transported to Merit Health River Region for treatment.

The Vicksburg Police Department said investigators believe the shooting was a targeted incident and that there is no further risk to the public. The investigation remains active.
