Two Baldwyn men arrested after deputies respond to burglary
PRENTISS COUNTY, Miss. — Two Baldwyn men were arrested after Prentiss County deputies responded to a reported burglary in progress at a home on May 22, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies were dispatched about 9:34 a.m. to 20 County Road 5075, where the homeowner’s sister told investigators two men had forced their way into her brother’s residence, the Prentiss County Sheriff’s Office said. She reported seeing the suspects on security camera footage and said both ran into woods behind the home when she arrived.
Deputies Navarro and Lawson spotted two people matching the description — shirtless, one in black shorts and the other in brown pants — running along the property line and took them into custody without incident, the sheriff’s office said. They were identified as 29-year-old Jacob Wayne Mears and 37-year-old Aaron Eddie Kelly, both of Baldwyn.
A search of the suspects turned up multiple items belonging to the homeowner, and deputies said a large amount of methamphetamine was found near where the men were taken into custody. The homeowner told deputies items had been removed from a disabled vehicle on the property and placed into a 2008 GMC Sierra registered to Mears. Officials recovered a .22 revolver from a trailer attached to the truck and the homeowner identified it as taken from under his bed.
Mears was charged with burglary of a dwelling, burglary of an automobile and possession of methamphetamine, 10 to 30 grams, enhanced with a firearm. Kelly was charged with burglary of a dwelling, burglary of an automobile, possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of methamphetamine, 10 to 30 grams, enhanced with a firearm, and tampering with physical evidence; authorities said all charges against Kelly will be pursued under habitual offender status. Justice Court Judge Ray Hall set Mears’ bond at $150,000 and Kelly’s bond at $200,000, and both men were taken to the Prentiss County Jail. The charges will be presented to a Prentiss County grand jury.
