Tropical system brings heavy rain Thursday, raises flash flood risk
A Facebook post warned that a tropical system will bring significant additional rain to the area Thursday, increasing the risk of flash flooding. The post said total rainfall for the week in some spots could reach 8-10 inches.
The post said the additional rainfall could lead to even more significant flash flooding, especially in areas highlighted in red. Officials and emergency managers commonly use such color-coded maps to show the highest-risk zones.
Tropical systems often produce prolonged, heavy rainfall that can overwhelm drainage systems, cause rapid runoff and trigger sudden floods. Low-lying neighborhoods, urban areas with limited drainage and communities near creeks and rivers are typically most vulnerable.
Residents should monitor local forecasts, avoid driving through flooded roadways and follow guidance from local emergency management and the National Weather Service. Preparations can include securing outdoor items and having an emergency plan in case roads become impassable.
We will provide more information as it becomes available.
