Mississippians face flash flood risk as heavy rain forecast
Mississippians should stay weather aware over the next couple of days as heavy rain raises the risk of flash flooding across the state, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said.
Current estimates from state officials show South Mississippi could receive 3 to 5 inches of rain, Central Mississippi 4 to 7 inches and North Mississippi 1 to 3 inches.
Central and South Mississippi face a moderate risk of flash flooding, while North Mississippi faces a slight risk, MEMA said. Officials urged residents not to drive through flooded roadways and to avoid areas prone to rapid runoff.
The agency said it is deploying sandbags at the request of local emergency managers, including to Harrison, Jackson, Lawrence, Pearl River and Walthall counties, and that the state will deploy additional resources as necessary.
Flash floods can develop quickly during intense rainfall and make roads impassable; residents should monitor local forecasts and follow instructions from emergency officials. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
