Reeves urges Mississippi to stay weather aware as rain raises flood risk

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves posted over the weekend that parts of the state could receive steady rainfall and that periods of flash flooding are possible.

The Facebook post said coastal areas could see 0.5–2 inches of rain and much of the rest of the state could receive 0.5–1 inch. The post added that the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency will continue monitoring conditions throughout the weekend and respond as necessary.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, which coordinates the state’s response to natural disasters and other emergencies, often works with the National Weather Service and local officials to track storms and issue warnings. Flash flooding can develop rapidly during heavy rains, posing risks to drivers, low-lying communities and infrastructure.

Emergency officials often advise residents to move to higher ground, avoid driving through flooded roadways and stay tuned to local forecasts and alerts. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
