Facebook post urges drivers to share road with motorcycles

A Facebook post Tuesday urged motorists and motorcyclists to “share the road” as warmer weather brings more riders onto public roadways.

The post reminded motorcycle riders to ride defensively and never assume other drivers see them. It advised extra caution in construction zones, avoiding poor weather when possible, and staying out of vehicle blind spots. The post noted that if a rider cannot see a driver’s face in a mirror, the driver likely cannot see the rider, and it recommended using headlights and reflective gear to increase visibility.

Motorists were told to increase following distance behind motorcycles, slow down and use extra caution at intersections — especially when making left turns — and to check mirrors and look over their shoulder before changing lanes. The post encouraged drivers to stay aware of motorcycles, enlist passengers to help watch for riders and be prepared to share the road, noting that motorcycles have the same rights to the roadway as other vehicles.

The message concluded with the slogan, “Look Twice. Save a Life. Share the Road.” Motorcyclists are more vulnerable in crashes, the post said. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
