Heavy rain continues; flash flooding likely in north-central, east-northeast Mississippi
Heavy rain will continue across parts of Mississippi today, with areas of flash flooding likely, forecasters say.
Forecasters warned that some areas from north-central to east-northeast Mississippi could receive 3 to 5 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts possible in a short period of time. Such rainfall rates can overwhelm drainage systems and cause rapid rises on streams and creeks.
Flash flooding poses a particular danger because it can develop quickly, often with little advance notice. Low-lying areas, roads and underpasses are at increased risk. Motorists should avoid driving through flooded roadways, and residents in flood-prone locations are advised to move to higher ground if water begins to rise.
People in the affected area should monitor local forecasts and alerts from meteorologists and public safety officials and be prepared to take action if conditions deteriorate. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
