Storm Prediction Center issues enhanced severe weather risk for Mississippi

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center issued an Enhanced Risk, the third of five threat categories, for severe storms across Mississippi from Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday morning, May 6-7, 2026.

The outlook warns of damaging winds up to 70 mph, hail up to golf-ball size and the possibility of tornadoes, including strong tornadoes. The center issued the outlook to alert residents, emergency managers and local weather offices in the state.

Enhanced Risk indicates an increased likelihood of organized, potentially widespread severe storms compared with lower-risk categories. The Storm Prediction Center, part of the National Weather Service and based in Norman, Oklahoma, issues convective outlooks that guide local forecast offices and emergency planners.

The advisory included guidance to stay weather-aware, have multiple ways to receive warnings and know a safe place to shelter if warnings are issued. Residents should monitor local forecasts, keep phones charged and follow directions from local emergency officials. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
