Starkville officers mentor campers at Oktibbeha County 4-H camp

Starkville police officers spent the week mentoring local youth and teaching outdoor skills at the Oktibbeha County 4-H Summer Outdoor Camp, the department said on its Facebook page.

Lt. Shane Kelly, Lt. Josh Wilson and Sgt. Charlie Jones joined campers for fishing and other activities, and the department noted that for many participants it was their first time fishing. Campers also learned kayaking, pond management and conservation, the post said.

4-H is a national youth development organization that offers hands-on learning in areas such as agriculture, science and citizenship. County 4-H camps typically emphasize outdoor education, leadership and stewardship of natural resources, which local officials say can foster a lifelong interest in conservation and safe outdoor recreation.

The Starkville Police Department’s involvement reflects a broader trend of community policing and youth outreach, in which law enforcement agencies partner with local organizations to build relationships and provide positive role models. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
