Lowndes County STING Unit arrests two on methamphetamine charges
LOWNDES COUNTY, Mississippi — The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office STING Unit arrested two people following a traffic stop that led to the seizure of methamphetamine, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.
Agents said they received a tip that a vehicle traveling from Monroe County to Columbus was carrying illegal narcotics. They located the vehicle in the area described by the tipster and stopped it on Highway 45 North, where they developed probable cause to search the vehicle and its occupants.
Investigators recovered methamphetamine concealed on the persons of both occupants. They seized approximately 1 ounce of methamphetamine from 25-year-old Alexis Denney, who was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, and approximately 0.25 ounce from 43-year-old Silverine Jefferson, who was charged with possession of methamphetamine, the statement said.
Both suspects were taken to the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center and remain in custody awaiting initial court appearances. Investigators said Denney and Jefferson are on probation through the Mississippi Department of Corrections; Jefferson was wearing a court-ordered ankle monitor at the time of arrest.
Sheriff Eddie Hawkins praised the STING Unit and urged public cooperation, saying the investigation succeeded because community members reported suspicious activity. The sheriff’s office encouraged anyone with information about illegal drug activity to contact the office or submit anonymous tips through Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers.
As with all criminal cases, the charges are accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
