Oxford police bring campers to City of Oxford Municipal Court for mock trials

OXFORD, Miss. — The Oxford Police Department said on Facebook that campers visited the City of Oxford Municipal Court to learn about court procedures and take part in mock trials.

According to the department’s post, the visit was part of activities for Camp C.O.P.S., a community outreach program the department highlighted in the message. The post thanked courthouse staff for their assistance in hosting the event.

Municipal courts typically handle matters such as traffic violations, local ordinance cases and other misdemeanors, and court visits like this are often used to teach basic civics and the role of the judicial system. Community policing programs and youth camps are designed to build relationships between law enforcement and residents and to give young people a firsthand look at legal and public-safety processes.
