Pike County deputies visit Camp Sunshine, let campers explore patrol vehicles

PIKE COUNTY, Ala. — Pike County Sheriff’s Office personnel recently visited Camp Sunshine, giving campers a chance to see patrol vehicles, activate emergency sirens and meet K-9 Sasha, the office said.

Chief Deputy Damian Gatlin and K-9 Deputy Steven Melton attended the visit with K-9 Sasha and brought snacks and refreshments for attendees, the Sheriff’s Office Public Relations Department said. The office said the event produced smiles and laughter as children interacted with deputies in a hands-on setting.

“Spending time with the wonderful children at Camp Sunshine is about more than a visit — it’s about creating smiles, making memories, and showing our young people that law enforcement officers genuinely care about them and their families,” Chief Deputy Damian Gatlin said in a statement provided by the public relations department.

The Sheriff’s Office said opportunities like the visit aim to build positive relationships between deputies and youth and to demonstrate community policing principles. The office thanked Camp Sunshine for hosting the team and said it looks forward to more opportunities to serve children and families in Pike County.
